Best Snow Treks in Uttarakhand for Winter 2026–27
If you’re dreaming of waking up to snow-covered forests, frozen trails and Himalayan peaks glowing in the morning light, the best snow treks in Uttarakhand for winter 2026–27 give you plenty of options. From the classic summit climb of Kedarkantha to the wide-open meadows of Dayara Bugyal, each trek offers a very different winter experience.
And that’s the fun part.
There isn’t one trek that is perfect for everyone. Some people want deep snow and a summit. Others want quiet meadows, frozen lakes or an easier introduction to winter trekking. Uttarakhand has all of them.
For winter 2026–27, we’re looking at six excellent options: Kedarkantha, Gulabi Kantha, Kuari Pass, Dayara Bugyal, Brahmatal and Chandrashila.
So, which one should you choose?
Let’s get into it.
When Is the Best Time for Snow Treks in Uttarakhand?
The main snow trekking season in Uttarakhand generally runs through the winter months, with December to February being the period most trekkers look at for snow. January and February can offer particularly strong winter conditions, although actual snowfall and trail conditions vary from year to year.
That last part is important.
Snow isn’t something you can schedule like a train.
One year a trail may receive heavy snowfall early in December. Another year, the best conditions may arrive later. Weather, altitude and recent snowfall all affect what you’ll actually find on the trail.
For that reason, don’t book a winter trek simply because a website says, “January means guaranteed snow.” Check the current conditions closer to your departure date and travel with a team that understands the route.
1. Kedarkantha Trek – The Classic Winter Snow Trek
If someone says winter trek in Uttarakhand, Kedarkantha is probably one of the first names that comes to mind.
And there is a good reason for that.
The trail travels through snow-covered forests and open clearings before climbing towards the Kedarkantha summit at around 3,800 metres. Uttarakhand Tourism describes it as an easy-to-moderate trek and specifically highlights its winter landscape, snowy forests and panoramic Himalayan views.
The summit is what makes Kedarkantha especially satisfying. You aren’t simply walking through snow; you’re working towards a proper Himalayan summit.
On a clear morning, peaks including Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch and Kala Nag can appear across the horizon.
Best for:
First-time snow trekkers, summit lovers and anyone who wants the classic Himalayan winter experience.
If this is your first serious snow trek, Kedarkantha Trek is one of the strongest choices on this list.
2. Gulabi Kantha Trek – For a Quieter Winter Experience
If Kedarkantha feels like the obvious choice, Gulabi Kantha is the one to consider when you want something a little less predictable.
Gulabi Kantha is an offbeat trek in Uttarakhand that combines forest trails, open mountain landscapes and high-altitude views. It is also known for its rhododendron landscapes later in the season.
During winter, however, the scenery changes completely.
Snow covers the trail and turns the landscape into a much quieter version of the mountain. You don’t get the same level of crowds associated with some of Uttarakhand’s most famous winter routes.
That’s a big part of its appeal.
Best for:
Trekkers looking for snow, mountain views and a quieter trail away from the busiest winter routes.
If you’ve already done a popular Himalayan trek and want to try something different, Gulabi Kantha deserves a place on your list of best snow treks in Uttarakhand.
3. Kuari Pass Trek – Snow, Forests and Big Himalayan Views
Kuari Pass offers a different kind of winter experience.
Instead of being all about one summit, the trek takes you through forests, meadows and high mountain terrain before reaching the famous Kuari Pass.
The big attraction here is the scenery.
On clear days, the route opens towards some spectacular Himalayan peaks. Winter adds another layer to the experience, with snow-covered trails and forests changing the character of the landscape completely.
It is also a longer and more demanding experience than simply taking a short snow walk, so preparation matters.
Best for:
Trekkers who want dramatic Himalayan views and a more substantial winter trekking experience.
For someone who has already done an easier trek and wants to step things up, Kuari Pass Trek can be a great choice.
4. Dayara Bugyal – The Snow Meadow Experience
Some treks impress you with peaks.
Dayara Bugyal impresses you with space.
In summer, the famous high-altitude meadow is covered in green grass. Come winter, that same landscape can transform into a huge white expanse.
Instead of walking through narrow forest trails for most of the day, you eventually step into wide-open snow-covered meadows with mountains surrounding the horizon.
That’s what makes the Dayara Bugyal Trek so special in winter.
It is also widely considered one of the more accessible winter treks in Uttarakhand, making it attractive to beginners who want to experience snow without immediately jumping into a demanding route.
Best for:
Beginners, families, photographers and anyone who loves wide-open mountain landscapes.
If your idea of a perfect snow trek is slowly walking across a massive white meadow with the Himalayas in the distance, Dayara Bugyal should be high on your list.
5. Brahmatal Trek – The Frozen Lake Experience
Brahmatal brings something different to the table: high-altitude lakes and winter mountain scenery.
The trek is known for its winter landscape, and the frozen Brahmatal Lake adds another memorable element to the journey.
The trail also offers impressive Himalayan views, making it a popular option for trekkers who want a proper multi-day winter adventure without going into expedition-level terrain. Current winter trekking guides generally place Brahmatal among Uttarakhand’s established snow trekking routes.
There is something strangely beautiful about reaching a lake that would look completely different during the warmer months and finding it surrounded by snow and ice.
Best for:
Trekkers who want snow, forests, mountain views and a frozen-lake experience.
If you’ve already done Kedarkantha and want your next winter trek to feel different, Brahmatal is worth considering.
6. Chandrashila Trek – A Short Trek with a Huge View
Then there’s Chandrashila.
The Chopta–Tungnath–Chandrashila route is one of the most popular short Himalayan trekking experiences in Uttarakhand. In winter, snowfall can completely transform the landscape around Chopta and Tungnath.
The route takes you to Tungnath before continuing towards Chandrashila summit, which sits at roughly 4,000 metres. From the top, clear weather can reveal impressive views of peaks such as Chaukhamba, Nanda Devi and Trishul.
The trek is relatively short compared with several multi-day winter routes. However, don’t mistake short for effortless.
Snow and ice can make the final climb considerably more demanding, especially when conditions are poor.
Best for:
Trekkers who want a shorter winter adventure with a proper summit and spectacular Himalayan views.
It is also a great option if you don’t have enough time for a five- or six-day trek.
Best Snow Treks in Uttarakhand: Which One Should You Choose?
Here’s the simplest way to look at them.
| Trek | Best For | Winter Experience |
|---|---|---|
| Kedarkantha | First snow trek & summit | Snow forests + summit |
| Gulabi Kantha | Quieter, offbeat experience | Snow + forests + solitude |
| Kuari Pass | Experienced trekkers | Snow + long Himalayan views |
| Dayara Bugyal | Beginners & families | Huge snow-covered meadows |
| Brahmatal | Winter lake experience | Snow + frozen lake + peaks |
| Chandrashila | Short summit trek | Snow + Tungnath + panoramic views |
There really isn’t a universal winner.
Want a classic snow trek with a summit? Kedarkantha.
Want something quieter? Gulabi Kantha.
Want big Himalayan scenery? Kuari Pass.
Want huge snowy meadows? Dayara Bugyal.
Want a frozen lake? Brahmatal.
Want a shorter trek with an impressive summit? Chandrashila.
Which Is the Best Snow Trek for Beginners?
If this is your first Himalayan snow trek, Kedarkantha, Dayara Bugyal and Chandrashila are the options I’d look at first.
Kedarkantha gives you the full snow-trek feeling with a summit climb. Dayara Bugyal is particularly attractive if you want gentler terrain and wide-open landscapes. Chandrashila works well if you have less time but still want the satisfaction of reaching a summit.
That doesn’t mean you can simply arrive in sneakers and walk into the mountains.
Winter trekking requires proper clothing, suitable footwear, good preparation and an experienced trek team. Conditions can change quickly, and snow-covered trails can be far more tiring than they look in photographs.
What Should You Carry for a Winter Snow Trek?
Your packing list becomes much more important once snow enters the picture.
A good pair of trekking shoes, warm layers, gloves, woollen socks, sunglasses and a reliable waterproof outer layer are essential starting points. Depending on the route and current snow conditions, equipment such as microspikes or gaiters can also become useful.
And don’t underestimate the sun.
Snow reflects sunlight strongly, so sunglasses and sunscreen are important even when the temperature is freezing.
Most importantly, pack according to the actual trek rather than trying to carry your entire wardrobe to the mountains.
A lighter backpack is a happier backpack.
