The Rupin Pass Trek is considered a moderate to difficult trek. It involves long trekking days, steep ascents, snow crossings near the pass, and high altitude conditions, making it suitable for trekkers with good fitness and some prior trekking experience.
The best time for the trek is May to June and September to October.
In summer, trekkers experience snowfields and blooming alpine meadows, while autumn offers clear skies and stunning mountain views.
The trek reaches its highest point at Rupin Pass Summit (15,250 ft), which offers spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan ranges.
The trek usually takes 7 days, including the drive from Shimla to the starting village and the descent into the beautiful Sangla Valley.
Accommodation is provided in homestays in villages like Jiskun and Jakha, while during the trekking days, trekkers stay in high-quality alpine camps on triple sharing basis.
While beginners with strong fitness can attempt it, prior high-altitude trekking experience is recommended because the trek includes challenging sections like snow slopes, steep climbs, and long trekking hours.
Weather in the Himalayas can change quickly. During summer, temperatures range between 5°C to 15°C in the day and can drop below 0°C at night, especially near the pass.
Some of the key highlights include the Rupin Waterfall campsite, snow bridges, hanging village of Jakha, alpine meadows, and the dramatic pass crossing with panoramic Himalayan views.
Trekkers should be able to walk 8–10 km for several hours with a backpack. Regular cardio exercises like running, cycling, or stair climbing for a few weeks before the trek are recommended.
Mobile network is usually available only until Jiskun Village or sometimes Jakha Village. After that, there is little to no network connectivity until the trek ends near Sangla.
