Begin your Pin Bhaba Pass Trek with an early morning drive from Shimla to Kafnu, a scenic mountain village nestled in the Bhaba Valley. The journey takes you through winding Himalayan roads, picturesque valleys, dense forests, and traditional mountain settlements, gradually leading into the remote landscapes of Himachal Pradesh. Along the way, catch glimpses of the impressive Bhaba River and the hydroelectric power project developed along its course.
After approximately 200 km and 7 hours of driving, reach Kafnu at 2,400 meters (7,900 feet), the starting point of your trekking adventure. Settle into your guesthouse, relax after the journey, and prepare your gear for the trek ahead. Keep a fleece jacket handy during the drive as temperatures can drop in the evening. Dinner and overnight stay at Kafnu.
After breakfast, begin your trek from Kafnu towards Mulling, following a scenic trail that gradually climbs deeper into the beautiful Bhaba Valley. The first half of the trail consists of a relatively gradual ascent, while the route becomes steeper and more challenging as you gain altitude. Along the way, pass through dense forests of silver birch, pine, and oak, with natural water sources available at several points.
The trail also offers views of the Bhaba Hydroelectric Project, including the remarkable underground dam, while the surrounding forest and mountain landscapes create a peaceful Himalayan setting. After approximately 11 km of trekking in 8–9 hours, reach Mulling at 3,250 meters (10,700 feet). Settle into your twin-sharing tents, enjoy a warm meal, and rest for the night. Packed lunch and dinner included.
After breakfast, continue your journey from Mulling towards Kara, following a relatively easy trail across rocky mountain terrain. The route gradually gains altitude as you move deeper into the high-altitude landscapes of the Bhaba Valley. Several natural water sources can be found along the trail, providing opportunities to refill your water bottles and take short breaks amidst the peaceful surroundings.
After covering approximately 6 km in 4–5 hours, reach Kara at 3,550 meters (11,700 feet). The final kilometre involves a steeper ascent before you arrive at the campsite located near a beautiful high-altitude lake. Settle into your tents, enjoy a hot lunch at the campsite, and spend the evening relaxing and acclimatizing to the increasing altitude. Overnight stay in tents.
After breakfast, begin your trek from Kara towards Pushtirang, following a continuous uphill trail through increasingly rugged high-altitude terrain. The route passes through a combination of rocky sections and loose mud, with a mountain stream crossing adding an adventurous element to the journey. As you gain altitude, the lush landscapes gradually give way to more barren and dramatic mountain surroundings.
After approximately 5 km of trekking in 3–4 hours, reach Pushtirang at 4,100 meters (13,500 feet). This is the final campsite where the Bhaba River remains a prominent part of the journey. From here, enjoy magnificent views of Hansbeshan Peak, Nimish Khango, Tari Khango, and Pin Bhaba Pass, while preparing for the challenging pass crossing ahead. Enjoy a hot lunch at the campsite and spend the evening resting and acclimatizing. Overnight stay in tents.
Start the day early as you embark on the most challenging and rewarding section of the Pin Bhaba Pass Trek. From Pushtirang, begin a continuous steep ascent towards Bhaba Pass at approximately 4,900 meters (16,100 feet). The trail becomes increasingly rugged as you climb higher, with limited water sources near the pass. After reaching the pass, take in spectacular views of the surrounding Himalayan landscape and the Pin River flowing far below.
The landscape changes dramatically as you cross from the lush green Bhaba Valley into the stark cold desert of Spiti. From Bhaba Pass, descend steeply for approximately 3 km before continuing on a gradual trail towards Mangrungse at 4,150 meters (13,600 feet). Covering around 12 km in 10–11 hours, this demanding day involves significant altitude gain and descent. A river crossing may be required along the route, so keep floaters or flip-flops handy. After reaching Mangrungse, settle into camp and rest after an unforgettable day in the high Himalayas. Packed lunch and overnight stay in tents.
After an early breakfast, begin the final trekking day of your Pin Bhaba Pass adventure as you descend from Mangrungse towards Mudh, a remote and picturesque village in the Spiti Valley. The trail is relatively easy compared to the previous day’s pass crossing, but the long distance makes it a tiring day. Follow a gradual mountain descent before eventually joining the road section leading towards Mudh.
After approximately 17 km of trekking in 7–8 hours, reach Mudh at around 3,750 meters (12,300 feet). The village is well known for its beautiful surroundings and pea cultivation, offering a glimpse into the unique lifestyle of the Spiti Valley. Depending on the itinerary and accommodation availability, stay overnight at a guesthouse in Mudh or Kaza. Packed lunch and overnight stay included.
After breakfast, begin your journey from Kaza towards Manali, leaving behind the rugged landscapes of Spiti and gradually descending towards the greener valleys of Himachal Pradesh. Start early in the morning as the approximately 200 km journey takes around 9–11 hours, passing through dramatic mountain roads, high-altitude landscapes, river valleys, and remote Himalayan settlements.
Arrive in Manali between approximately 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM, marking the end of your Pin Bhaba Pass adventure. The journey concludes with unforgettable memories of crossing a spectacular high-altitude pass, witnessing the dramatic transition from the green Bhaba Valley to the cold desert of Spiti, and experiencing some of the most remote landscapes of the Himalayas.
Note: Transportation from Kaza to Manali, as well as breakfast and lunch during the journey, are not included in the trek cost.
